Markus Koropp


Markus Koropp (*2000), born in Bonn, began playing the piano and violin at the age of three. By the age of ten, he was already composing his own pieces. He completed his school education in 2018 at the gifted education branch of the Christophorus-Gymnasium Königswinter and was nominated for the “German National Academic Foundation” (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes).
In 2014, the City of Cologne accepted him into the scholarship program “Pre-College Training” at the Rheinische Musikschule. From 2012 to 2019, he was annually awarded national and sponsorship prizes, as well as scholarships, at the “National Youth Composition Competition” (Bundeswettbewerb Jugend komponiert). He also received numerous awards at “Jugend musiziert.” As a regular participant in the “Internationale Musiktage” in Bad Leonfelden and Rohrbach since 2015, he was honored with the 10th Martin Hornstein Interpretation Prize. Furthermore, he won second prize at the “Rocky Mountain Music Competition 2021” and third prize at the “Gustav Mahler Piano Prize Competition.” Beyond music, he was also accepted into scientific scholarship programs such as the “Junior Academy NRW” and the “German Student Academy” (Deutsche Schülerakademie). Due to his competition successes, he was repeatedly invited by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research to the “Day of Talents” in Berlin.
In 2018, he attended the Summer Academy of the Mozarteum in Salzburg. In terms of composition, he was mentored by professors such as Philipp Vandré, Martin Christoph Redel, Gerhard Müller Hornbach, Karin Hausmann, Milica Djordjević, Detlev Glanert, Orm Finnendahl, Dieter Mack, Thomas Taxus Beck, Klaus-Hinrich Stahmer, Minas Borboudakis, Gerhard Nierhaus, Franck Bedrossian, Jérôme Combier, Brian Ferneyhough, Clemens Nachtmann, and Matthias Schlothfeld. As a pianist, he participated in masterclasses with Katherina Polyzoides-Sourvali, Matti Raekallio, Gabriel Kwok, Nikolaos Zafranas, Li-Fang Su, and Janna Polyzoides. He also studied Helmut Lachenmann’s piano piece Serynade with the composer himself in a masterclass.
Markus Koropp has performed contemporary music at festivals such as “Wien Modern 2023” and “Zett Emm” (2012 to 2022). His work as a composer and musician has taken him beyond Austria and Germany to Italy, Luxembourg, Greece, Slovenia, Poland, and China. His compositions have been broadcast on WDR and hr, and in 2019, he appeared on ORF’s “Klassik-Treffpunkt.” Markus Koropp is also a member of ARTrio, which he founded in 2022 alongside Nitai Emanuel Musić (violin) and Felix Obendorf (cello). The internationally rising ensemble has recently toured Germany and Poland. The group has been artistically shaped through masterclasses with Georg Hamann (Aron Quartet), Valentin Erben (Alban Berg Quartet), Günter Pichler (Alban Berg Quartet), Dirk Mommertz (Fauré Quartet), Wolfgang Redik (Vienna Piano Trio), Stefan Mendl (Vienna Piano Trio), Janna Polyzoides (Arcus Ensemble Wien), Laia Valentin Braun (Marmen Quartet), and Erich Höbarth (Quatuor
Mosaïques). ARTrio particularly focuses on a versatile repertoire ranging from Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven to Fanny Hensel, Cécile Chaminade, and Eugène Ysaÿe, as well as contemporary composers. Currently, he is pursuing a Master’s degree in Piano under Zoltán Füzesséry and a Bachelor’s degree in Composition under Clemens Gadenstätter at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
